Thomas Paine, who is the writer of Common Sense, opens the book with, in short, a rant about the important decision that's facing the entirety America. The aforementioned decision was about either to remain at the mercy of Britain, or to fight in a war for independence. According to Thomas Paine, the whole world should wish for the freedom of the America, since that will set an example for freedom and liberty that multiple other countries could follow. In Thomas' opinion, there is no way to obtain true freedom without democracy, and that that's one of the main reasons that America needs to separate from Britain. Once he has said his opening points, Thomas considered all of the arguments put forward by the people who wish to remain connected to Britain. One after another, he shoots these arguments down and reveals that they aren't anything other than excuses made up by cowards who don't want their lives to be put on the line for freedom. At the end of Common Sense, Thomas takes aim at a group of religious pacifists known as "Quakers" and tells them they shouldn't get their religious views mixed up in American politics. In his final lines, he inquires all patriotic Americans to join in slandering and loathing anyone who dares to say that God convicted the American War for Independence.
